As Gartner Report Hints: The Future of the CIO Role is Changing – Are We Ready?

Back in May, Gartner released the report “Why the CIO Must Play a Bigger Role in M&A,” revealing a compelling shift in the role of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) within mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Traditionally, CIOs have been brought in only at the later stages of M&A, but this report highlights a crucial turning point. To ensure the success of these deals, CIOs must be involved from the very beginning—well before integration or operations start. But is that enough? I believe it goes beyond that. As businesses accelerate towards digital transformation, driven by the up-and-coming AI 2.0 revolution, CIOs must step up or risk being sidelined in key strategic decisions. AI 2.0 isn’t just changing the game—it’s forcing the change.

The AI 2.0 Revolution is Reshaping Leadership

The report identifies AI 2.0 as the key driver behind this shift. This next wave of AI technology will fundamentally reshape business strategy. No longer confined to automating workflows or managing data, AI will push enterprises to reevaluate every aspect of their organizational structure. Companies looking to acquire AI-driven businesses will need their CIOs’ expertise to assess the technological, operational, and strategic fit of these acquisitions.

But AI 2.0 is about more than just M&A. As this revolution gains momentum, it could force organizations to rethink the CIO role altogether. Technology is no longer just a support function—it is the business. As I work on my second book, The Convergence of CIO and COO Roles in the Age of AI 2.0, I find myself grappling with a critical question: What will the CIO role look like in five years? Will it even exist as a standalone position?

The Uncertain Future of the CIO

Historically, the roles of CIO and COO have been distinct—the CIO focused on technology and innovation, while the COO managed operations. But in today’s digital landscape, ERP systems like SAP have embedded operational workflows, requiring COOs to work closely with IT. The operational flow itself is built into the system, meaning IT teams need a solid understanding of business processes to manage these systems effectively. The rise of AI 2.0 will further accelerate this convergence, with IT taking on more strategic roles. As a result, the boundaries between the CIO and COO roles could begin to fade.

In this evolving landscape, one thing is clear—the CIO’s role is transforming. As more companies merge IT and operational responsibilities, it’s not just about playing a bigger role in M&A, as Gartner suggested in their report. The CIO could soon be at the core of the business, overseeing not just technology but also operations, strategy, and culture.

Or will the CIO role disappear entirely? As AI embeds itself deeper into business processes, we might see a merger of the CIO and COO roles into a new kind of executive position—one that unites technology and operational leadership. Or perhaps entirely new C-suite roles will emerge, where the traditional distinctions between IT and operations fade altogether.

A Call to Reflect on the Future of Leadership

As I continue writing my second book, I’m exploring these shifts in more detail, and I would love to hear your thoughts. Are we on the verge of a complete redefinition of the CIO role? Will IT departments become fully integrated into the broader business landscape?

While the answers are uncertain, one thing is clear: the role of the CIO today will shape the leadership structures of tomorrow.

Conclusion: The Cornerstone of Future Organizations

The future of leadership will hinge on how well businesses adapt to the AI 2.0 revolution. Whether or not the CIO title exists in five years is less important than recognizing the monumental shift happening right now. For the time being, CIOs are becoming the cornerstone of the organization—driving M&A, operational efficiency, and strategic growth. But what happens next? I’m excited to explore these questions with you.
